Vergeet alle andere junior auto’s – het coolste kind uit de buurt rijdt door de straat in een van de beroemdste sportwagens uit de jaren 60, de Maserati Birdcage Tipo 61 Junior….
De Maserati Tipo 61 is een van de meest iconische auto’s van de jaren 60. De naam Birdcage is afgeleid van de unieke manier waarop de auto is gebouwd. De originele auto bestond uit 200 buisdelen die één robuust frame vormden.
Jay Leno noemt de Maserati Tipo 61 in Jay Leno’s Garage de meest perfecte raceauto allertijden, de lichtste en meest geavanceerde raceauto ooit gemaakt, tot dan toe.
De eerste zes auto’s gingen naar Amerika. Het Amerikaanse race-team Camoradi (Casner Motor Racing Division) werd opgericht door Lloyd “Lucky” Casner in 1960. Het team werd speciaal opgericht om te racen in de 24 Uren van Le Mans . De Camoradi team won met coureur Stirling Moss wel de 1000 km op de Nürburgring in 1960, ondanks een gebroken brandstofleiding, en in 1961. De 24 Uren van Le Mans wonnen ze echter nooit.
De junior versie is net zo mooi als zijn grotere broer en is volledig met de hand gemaakt. Carrosserie van glasvezel, gedetailleerd stalen buizenframe, 4 schijfremmen, lichtmetalen spaakwielen, werkende meters, Michelin-banden en zelfs een kleine Maserati-sleutel en startknop waarmee de 110 cc 4-takt motor kan worden gestart. Mijn favoriete onderdeel is echter de prachtige gelaste rvs open uitlaatpijp. Het geluid hieruit is zeer indrukwekkend.
Door de verfijnde afwerking, de grote hoeveelheid details en de zeer kleine oplage behoort deze auto tot het high-end segment junior auto’s. Met zo’n hoog niveau van vakmanschap zal het zeker een veilige investering blijken te zijn. Als je de motorsport ‘koorts’ echt aan je kind wilt overdragen, kun je het beste een plekje in de garage vrijmaken.

De topsnelheid bedraagt ca. 50 km/h.

The Maserati Tipo 61 is one of the most iconic cars of the 60s. The name Birdcage is derived from the unique way in which the car was built. The original car consisted of 200 tube parts that formed one robust frame.
Jay Leno calls the Maserati Tipo 61 in Jay Leno’s Garage the most perfect race car of all time, the lightest and most advanced race car ever made, until then.
The first six cars went to America. The American racing team Camoradi (Casner Motor Racing Division) was founded by Lloyd “Lucky” Casner in 1960. The team was created specifically for racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Camoradi team with driver Stirling Moss won the 1000 km at the Nürburgring in 1960, despite a broken fuel line, and in 1961. However, they never won the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The junior version is just as beautiful as its bigger brother and is completely handmade. Fiberglass body, detailed tubular steel frame, 4 disc brakes, alloy wire wheels, working gauges, Michelin tires and even a small Maserati key and starter button to start the 110 cc 4-stroke engine. My favorite part, however, is the beautiful welded stainless steel open exhaust pipe. The sound from this is very impressive.
Due to the refined finish, the large amount of details and because very few are produced, this car belongs to the high-end segment of junior cars. With such a high level of craftsmanship, it will certainly prove to be a safe investment. If you really want to transfer the motorsport “fever” to your child, it is best to make space in the garage.
